Completed by Kyle while employed at Balance Associates. Kyle was a part of the initial design team for the main house and became lead on the project during construction documents phase and also managed the project through construction. Kyle also designed the upper guest house and followed it through construction. Located on a waterfront lake site on the Olympic Peninsula of Western Washington, the site was developed for a 1500 square feet two-bedroom main cabin with a secondary detached garage and studio guest suite of 1,000 square feet. Both houses are carefully placed into the hillside. The site has a very small buildable area that is limited by steep slope and heavy rainfall amounts. A variance was obtained to build this house given its delicate site and a landscaping plan has been implemented to restore the site with native plantings which also helps with erosion from rainfall. The spine of the house is anchored into the hillside with an insulated concrete retaining wall. Both houses are oriented to capture views of the lake and mountains beyond.
