Wallingford Duplex Remodel

This 1906 home in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle had previously been converted into a duplex with a living unit on each level. We were tasked with turning it back into a more functional single-family residence, while retaining much of the existing character on the exterior. Phase one included opening up the main level and removing a dropped ceiling to create a spacious great room and semi-private den that could also double as a guest bedroom. During phase two, the upper level will be expanded to fill the entire footprint, creating three bedrooms and two full baths. In addition to the second story build-out, the exterior will also receive new windows, entry awning, paint and landscaping. Working with the homeowners, we came up with a design solution that took a gallery approach – to create a simple and elegant space that allows for the furnishings and finishes to become the focal point. This project also had a modest budget, with the homeowners taking on some of the work and sourcing materials, products and furnishings themselves.
