Olomana Sunrise Farm: A Natural Modern Hawaiian Home

Situated on a lush two-acre property in the Olomana Heights neighborhood on the windward side of Oahu, Olomana Sunrise Farm is a thoughtful response to a unique landscape . This natural modern Hawaiian home honors the site’s agricultural heritage, featuring a fruit tree orchard that will be expanded as the home is constructed to further develop the land. The residence is designed to capture a trifecta of panoramic views: the sharp peaks of Olomana Ridge, the dramatic Ko’olau range, and the blue expanse of Waimanalo Bay. It will serve as a forever home for our clients, balancing open and airy living spaces with lanai that connect to the land they will steward for decades to come.

A Cohesive Gathering Space

The home is built around the ritual of food and family. The main floor integrates the kitchen, dining, and living rooms into a single gathering space designed for social connection. Framed by large windows and sliding glass doors, this central hub provides a continuous connection to the landscape. The design prioritizes a minimalist aesthetic, keeping the main kitchen visually quiet by utilizing a secondary prep kitchen for cleanup and storage. An outdoor kitchen lanai mauka wraps around to the main lanai, allowing the family to prepare and share meals while overlooking the expanding orchard.

Private Sanctuary and Lanai

The primary suite is located on the main level to support aging in place. Large sliding glass doors provide a seamless connection to the outdoors, framing mountain views and inviting natural airflow. Adjacent to the living areas, a covered outdoor lanai offers a protected space for dining while enjoying the dramatic backdrop of Olomana Ridge.

Site and Materials

The architecture features a refined palette of termite resistant tropical hardwood siding, stucco, architectural concrete, and Alaskan yellow cedar ceilings, designed to weather beautifully in the coastal environment. The building massing is carefully positioned to act as an acoustic buffer against highway noise, creating a series of quiet, protected outdoor spaces that harmonize with the expanding fruit orchard.

As architects, part of our job is to weave the various requirements with the client’s ideas and goals to create a design solution that meets both the big picture dreams as well as the technical minutia.
