kitchen materials palette

There are still a few decisions left to be made, but this is how the kitchen is shaping up in terms of materials and products.

And as I sit here in the basement, typing at a vinyl-covered folding table, I cannot wait for this new kitchen to happen!

  1. Short-term (relatively) stalker, first time poster. Love the materials, and I’m really interested to see how the dark cork floor turns out. I really dig the lofted layout yall have drawn up for your house, I just think that’s the coolest idea. Can’t wait to see everything come together. Btw, your dog is awesome.

  2. Love! So clean and sleek, but with a warm and organic twist – not too stark. Can’t wait to see it come together. Is the VG fir for the walls?

  3. Long-term stalker, infrequent poster. LOOKS DELICIOUS. Love the lighting and the countertops, your whole house is going to look incredible (aside from the parts that already do!)

Out of curiosity, did you guys check out recycled glass countertops? like these:
    http://www.greendepot.com/greendepot/product.asp?prod_name=IceStone+Samples&pf_id=ISS&dept_id=4700&s_id=0&

Seems like a very green product, and cool that they’re manufactured in the States. I have no idea what the price comparison would be to the quartz though.

  4. Thanks Daniel! I actually just requested some pricing for IceStone yesterday…I remember it being pretty spendy, but I do like that it comes out of Brooklyn!

  5. The VG fir will be used to wrap the outside face of the tall pantry and over the top of the upper cabinets (since they won’t go up to the ceiling). The idea is that since the kitchen will be part of the larger living space, we wanted it to feel more like a built-in and less like things were floating on the walls. (There is a sketchup model on some previous posts that probably shows this better than I can explain it!) We might also use it to wrap the sides of the island…still deciding on that one.

  6. Short term stalker here as well, haha. I love seeing before and afters and the in between pics you post are just icing on the cake! I keep imagining myself doing this sort of stuff when I someday own my own home, but I don’t exactly have any architectural experience. Anyways, I was wondering what the source of those stainless steel pulls is? I’m looking for something with a 90 degree angle, actually, but those are a good starting point. Thanks!

  7. Hi Tuli! The stainless steel pulls that we showed are made by Reveal Designs (http://www.reveal-designs.com/) a collaboration of well-known (and many Northwest) architects and designers. Check out the website and be prepared to drool! I’m not sure what the pricing is yet, but IKEA sells a similar style (in aluminum) and check out http://www.hardwarehut.com and search for “EPCO”. They make lots of similar pulls and we used one of their styles for our bathroom vanity.

  8. Thought I’d unveil myself as well 🙂 Really enjoying your blog since I found it through AT. Especially love all the sketchup models and pictures of Bailey. I wanted to say thank you – you inspired me to try to learn to use sketchup and through your blog, I discovered Orangette! Somehow it feels that you guys and Molly might be friends.
It’s amazing that you’re coming up and implementing all these ideas by yourself AND you have full-time jobs. Way to go!

  9. Aww, thanks Katia! (And thanks to all the other new commenters today…it definitely keeps us motivated!!) Glad you discovered Sketchup (isn’t it great that there’s a free version through Google??) and Orangette. I love Molly’s blog and her writing style. We actually don’t know each other, though we’re both Oklahoma transplants living in Seattle…we even live near her and her husband’s restaurant!

  10. Looks good. I’m curious to see the dark cork floors in the finished kitchen, too. I’d thought about them years ago, but never considered the darker ones. I like! Did you talk about pricing for them or did I miss that?

  11. It ends up being about $7/SF for the dark and $10/SF for the lighter, striped pattern so we opted for the dark!

  12. Add my name to the stalker list, please. Care to share the source of those task lights?

  13. Hey Matt,

The task lights are from Resolute (a Seattle company). The reach lights we bought are from the “utility” line. I believe many of their products are sold through online retailers. Here’s a link to their website: http://www.resoluteonline.com/
