hanging the basil

I’ve been eyeing the Boskke sky planter for a while now and last week Kyle surprised me with one of my very own. I kinda love it. Not only do I have basil at my fingertips, but the little bit of greenery and whimsy is a perfect antidote to this dreary Seattle weather. (Ok, maybe a perfect antidote would be laying on a beach in Hawaii, but I’ll take what I can get.)

Read more about how we installed it (including a DIY hack) and our first reactions over at Re-Nest!

  1. I’m so in! Can you provide more images/info of how you hung to the ceiling? The Boskke site says their kit if for wood only, not plaster. I like the simple look of the part that attaches to your ceiling…

  2. Hey Holiday,

Our ceiling is plywood so we didn’t have any attachment issues. The kit comes with a metal hook and a plastic drywall anchor, so I think it could work for plaster if you’re careful. We ended up using the hanging hardware that came with our West Elm pendant light (that didn’t get used because we hardwired that fixture), so it’s a little different. But the basic idea is that you install a hook on your ceiling and then a steel wire slips over the hook and attaches to the “handle” on the planter via another small hook. This makes it easy to take down for watering, etc. The hook included in the kit isn’t proprietary or anything so I think you could use a number of different things.

  3. I’ve been looking at these and love them but just not sure how well they would keep the plant/herb. Can you tell me if the basil is lasting much longer than being on a counter top? I so hate having to buy them all the time. I’ve tried growing them outside but to no avail. Would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks. Lovely blog by the way need to do some back reading! : )

  4. Hi Catherine, it’s been about two weeks and so far, so good. I bought one of those “living” basil plants from the grocery store and I’m not sure how long it’s life is supposed to be if it’s just sitting on the countertop (this is my frist attempt at growing herbs indoors). I have had to water mine more frequently than the once a week recommendations that came with the Boskke.

  5. Thanks so much for the feedback. I’m not the best at remembering to water plants but it’s such a beautiful piece I’m sure I will be better?! I get just over a week out of basil on a counter top but I think the fact that gravity keeps the leaves from wilting possibly helps it last longer? I think I may just have to purchase one for my husbands birthday. Did you get the smaller size?
