Mt. Baker Remodel

Completed by Lauren while employed at Johnston Architects. Lauren was the project architect who managed the project from the initial design phase and worked with the owners and contractor during construction. An extensive remodel of a 1920’s home, the main challenge was to reconfigure the kitchen and informal dining and living spaces while working within the confines of the existing envelope.

The original layout consisted of a series of closed off rooms that no longer met the needs of the family. The new design opened these spaces up to one another, while maintaining the flow of hierarchy from the more formal to less formal areas of the home, as well as opening up to the adjacent garden space.

In addition to developing a more fluid transition between spaces, materials and finishes were chosen that complimented the age and details of the home while also serving as a canvas for the owner’s collection of modern art.
